The Finnish fashion industry is divided into old, traditional companies and several smaller brands created in the last 15 years. Most of the newcomers are designer-led – and based in Helsinki. The best-known fashion makers of the 1990s and 2000s are IVANAhelsinki, HANNA SARÉN, TIIA VANHATAPIO, MINNA PARIKKA and DANIEL PALILLO. However, the list goes on a lot longer. Here is two of them: GILLES ET DADA’s designers JASMIN MISHIMA and FEDERICO CABRERA.

GILLES ET DADA, the latest project of Finnish-Japanese-Argentine couple Jasmin Mishima and Federico Cabrera, has already received a lot of attention. The collection, consisting of women’s and men’s garments and t-shirts, is a state of mind, a platform for ideas, an art project and a statement.
“GILLES ET DADA is everything and nothing. It’s something you wanted to be,” Cabrera describes. “To us it’s a dream come true. Within it, we’ve found a place where we can be whatever comes to mind without having to consider industry standards or any other requirements.”
”Our collection is a plaintive monologue about the insolvency of the modern lifestyle and its effect on the development of the primordial tendency in all living creatures, including humans. It’s a sad reflection on the constant degradation of the modern world.”
”Trying to run a small brand while being conscious and responsible about your impact as a designer and producer isn’t easy. We like to take the opportunity to share the dilemma of it all through our collection. You can see the beginning in our selection of fabrics and in recycled materials, but the main idea is still the dilemma, not the solution. Sadly, the solution is yet to be found.”
