Timo Huhtala and Jopsu Ramu.
The designers behind design studio Musuta Ltd are JOPSU RAMU (b. 1982) and TIMO HUHTALA (b. 1979). They spend half the year in Finland and the other half in Japan.
Musuta Ltd. burst into the mainstream in June 2010, when they won the coveted Gold Lion award at Cannes International Advertising Festival with their interstitial campaign Urban Abstract, made for Finnish TV channel Nelonen. In the spring, the campaign also received bronze awards in the European Design Awards and the prestigious D&AD contest.
The tale of Musuta started in 2003 from album covers that Huhtala and Ramu made for Killer, Huhtala’s band at the time. Today they produce e.g. concepts, design and art, video and graphic design. In addition to Nelonen, their clientele includes Pepsi and Iittala.
Musuta fully employs Ramu, who has a background in spatial and furniture design, and Huhtala, who studied communications, but project teams can contain up to 30 people. The agency has a wide collaboration network in Japan. They also have a 24 square meter home in Tokyo (”probably the biggest apartment in the building”), as well as a ”mtg room” in an office building designed by architect KENZO TANGE.
”We make projects that tread the line between design and art. Urban Abstract was probably our most ambitious project so far. The four-minute story has got already a million hits online,” Ramu and Huhtala grin. †
