The social aspect

I like cooking (a lot), but I practically never cook just for myself. I hardly ever go to a restaurant alone even if I’m traveling alone. Why? Because the sharing and social aspect related to food is an important part of a meal and eating alone is more of an energy refill than a moment to enjoy food.

The social aspect of eating, doing things together and sharing experiences is also strongly present in the articles of this We Are Helsinki Food Issue. An appreciation for local food is no longer a new thing – many thirtysomethings in Helsinki seemed to go mushroom picking last fall – and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. This trend has made the Martha Association‘s cooking, preservation and household courses super popular and an increasing number of young members are joining the association. A good example is the Viipurinkatu Martha chapter which consists of 15 women, most of who work in the design industry.

The one-year-old and increasingly popular Restaurant Day is also based on the idea of doing things together. In June a new event, the Taste of Helsinki festival, will take over Helsinki, bringing together a number of the city’s best restaurants and local food lovers in a park by Töölönlahti. So let’s get your friends together and cook – or go out for dinner together. †
